The Pee Dee Presbytery Church Extension Committee felt the Holy Spirit a need for new growth in the Florence area.  This undertaking began as a result of the 157th Meeting of the Pee Dee Presbytery, January 22, 1963 at First Presbyterian Church, Darlington SC.  The following recommendations were approved by vote of the Presbyters:

Purchase housing for the Pastor in the Sandhurst subdivision

Purchasing a 7.3 acre parcel of land at the corner of Marsh Avenue and Third Loop Road

Call a Pastor, the Reverend Richard S. Andrews, to serve and shepherd the organization of this new community of our Lord Jesus Christ.

September 1, 1963 the Rev. Andrews and his family moved into the church housing. The Rev. Andrews earliest focus was on building personal relationships and visiting the local community.

John Calvin Presbyterian Chapel, began meeting October 13, 1963 at Briggs Elementary School in Florence SC. The following Sunday, October 20, 1963, Sunday School and Worship Services were moved to the Royall Elementary School.

January 28, 1964 at the 160th stated winter meeting at the request of the Chapel member, the Pee Dee Presbytery voted to organize the John Calvin Chapel as John Calvin Presbyterian Church. The Presbytery also affirmed that the charter membership roll was to be closed Easter Sunday, March 29, 1964.

February 2, 1964, the first organizational meeting of the John Calvin Presbyterian Church was held and the Rev. Andrews was called as the first pastor of the new church community.  At this meeting, six elders and six deacons were nominated and elected by acclamation of the congregation.  Easter Sunday, March 29, 1964 a service of ordination and installation was held and the roll of charter members was closed.

The Rev. Dr. Andrews served as John Calvin’s pastor until his retirement in 1998 at which time the Rev. Dr. Tom Miller joined John Calvin as Interim Pastor until June 2000.

On July 1, 2000 the Rev. Dr. Stuart Gordon accepted the call as pastor of John Calvin.  Prior to coming to John Calvin he served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Carthage NC. The Rev. Dr. Gordon departed John Calvin in August 2005 to accept a call to First Presbyterian Church, Nashville Tennessee to serve as the Associate Pastor of Discipleship at which time The Rev. Paul Abel joined John Calvin as Interim Pastor until August 2007.

That August 2007, the Rev. John Parks accepted the call as pastor as pastor of John Calvin. Prior to coming to John Calvin he served as pastor of Little Mountain Presbyterian Church in Abbeville SC.    

The Rev. Dr. Parks departed in November 2010, and accepted a call in January 2011 as the first serving Chaplain for the Presbyterian Communities of Florence SC.  In May of 2011 the Rev. Dr. Parks also accepted a call as the supply Pastor for Morton Presbyterian Church in Hartsville, SC. at which time the Rev. Dr. Rodney Foster served as interim pastor from December 2010 until May 2013.

In May of 2013 the Rev. Scott Hill accepted the call to John Calvin Presbyterian.  The Rev. Hill is second-career pastor who served as a Forest Ranger, Silviculturist, Forester, Entomologist and firefighter for 20 years with the USDA Forest Service. A graduate of Colorado State University and Columbia Theological Seminary. Pastor Scott has served churches in Michigan and South Carolina as a Teaching Elder, and in Georgia, and Wyoming as a Ruling Elder. Rev. Hill served until July 31, 2018.

Today, John Calvin Presbyterian Church is proud of our rich heritage of service before God. We continue to strive to be  a community that provides God’s love for everyone so we may all grow and develop as a God's people who nurtures God’s good creation through committed relationships locally, nationally and in the world.
